Perceptions of Rural Primary School Teachers on inclusive Education for the Disabled

Inclusive education is the need of the hour to achieve our universal goal of `Education for all’ is including the children with disabilities in regular schools. The success of inclusive education depends on the attitude, knowledge and skills of the regular schools teachers in educating the disabled child. This study tried to explore the perceptions of one hundred rural primary school teachers on inclusive education for the disabled. Seventy six percent of the teachers studied were females and the rest were males. The training on Inclusive Education for the Disabled given by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan helped the teachers to identify disabled children in their classroom. Teachers had both positive and negative views about Inclusive education. The teachers suggested provision of special teaching and learning materials, maintaining the class strength within 40, visit to special schools and rehabilitation centers, motivational camps for parents will be useful in making the schools more inclusive in nature.
