Development of Urbanization Index Model using Multi-dimensional Approach

Abstract

The experience has proven the importance of urbanization for poverty eradication, economic development, and modernization. An attempt has been made in this study to develop Urbanization index model from demographic aspect, Infrastructural development aspect, spatial aspect and economic development aspect. The state of Gujarat, India is taken as a study area. Three districts of Gujarat have been selected for determining the Urbanization index, Ahmedabad district, Kheda district and Sabarkantha district. Nine urbanization parameters, i.e, Population size, Population density, Educational facilities, Health services, Industries, Electricity facilities, roofing types, assets and % of Built-up area have been investigated in this study to assess the urbanization level of the three districts. The Urbanization index developed in this study can be used to measure the urbanicity of a district and for comparision of the urbanization levels of different districts.
