Shrimp Cultivation and Political Authority in Rural Bangladesh: An Overview

Abstract

The present study aims at determining the impact of shrimp cultivation on political authority in rural Bangladesh. In rural Bangladesh, nowadays shrimp cultivation has become a common sight, especially along the costal areas. Thus, change in occupations has already taken place. This has affected the living pattern of the rural poor. The impact is also noticeable politically. So, this study has been carried out at Bujbunia village in Khulna district where political crisis and involvement due to the shrimp cultivation increased over the years. This paper shows how this shrimp cultivation brought the negative impact like involvement of political authority, increased political conflict, terrorism, on the political life of the rural poor of that village and thus the changes in occupations took place. All the respondents of study area are engaged in different occupations. The study was conducted with the help of questionnaire survey, case study, and participation observation. The study also presents the results, followed by some recommendations.
