The Making of New Delhi: 1911–1931

This paper studies the journey of the making of New Delhi from 1911 to 1931. In 1911, it was decided that there would be a new capital of the British Empire in India. Till then Calcutta was the capital of the British Raj. Once the shift of capital was decided, there was work to be done on the various aspects of New Delhi. This paper uses the original files and documents from 1911 to 1931 sourced from the National Archives of India, New Delhi, to study the making of the new capital. It looks at the work of the various committees that were formed to plan New Delhi. Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker were the architects of the famous buildings of New Delhi such as The Rashtrapati Bhavan and the North and South Blocks.
