The world encounters a crucial problem of conventional fuels depletion. The scarcity of oil reserves makes renewable energy resources more attractive. The most feasible way to meet this growing demand is by using alternative fuels. In this study Pongamia oil is used as an alternate fuel to produce a biodiesel. This paper deals with the production of biodiesel from Pongamia oil, the properties of raw and transesterified oil and focuses on performance testing in diesel engine. Pongamia as biodiesel, blended with diesel was tested for their performance in diesel engines. This oil is blended in varying proportion like 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% with diesel and the effect on diesel engine performance is studied. The effect of use of biodiesel fuel on engine power, fuel consumption and heat loss involved are collected and analyzed with that of conventional diesel fuel.
