A Novel Fuzzy Logic based Adaptive Duty Cycling for Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract

Energy saving is very much essential in resource constraint network especially Wireless Sensor Networks. The energy consumption of the nodes can be reduced by varying the sleep and wake up time of the node. Adaptive duty cycling is employed to vary the schedule for wake up and sleep duration of the nodes. To attain this objective, a fuzzy logic based duty cycling for the nodes to evaluate the node sleeping probability is proposed. In this proposal, the residual energy of sensor node, degree of neighbouring sensor node, node traffic and mobility of the node are the input parameters considered. The sleeping probability of the node is used to predict the node's duty cycling duration for which the node should be awaken and then put to sleep so to reduce the energy consumption of the node. The fuzzy based duty cycling approach is implemented in Matlab. The impact of node traffic and mobility of the nodes on sleeping probability shows improved performance.
