Abstract

Target trail and network connectivity are the important issues in mobile sensor networks (MSNs). In a densely deployed wireless sensor networks, all sensors in the configuration area can provide coverage and connectivity but consume their energy efficiently. This work proposes an approach of improving the network lifetime and energy conservation by using sink trail mechanism. Generally, MSN is the collection of independent and scattered sensors with movable capability. Target trail is usually the coverage area of a randomly distributed sensor, which selects and successfully activates mutual set of nodes such that each set completely monitors the entire area. Network connectivity is mainly used to collect and report data to the sink node through sensor nodes. Network connectivity is achieved by using heuristic random network coding. The sink trail mechanism is done in three modules. Initially, the boundary sensors are used to concentrate the target where the other sensors are in the sleeping mode. If the target moves beyond the boundary, the neighbor sensors are activated for monitoring process. Finally, if there is any problem identified in tracking the target the master handoff method is used to resolve it. By activating the minimal number of sensors in each module and keeping other sensors in sleeping mode, the entire mechanism assures the energy conservation of the system. For both existing and proposed method, the performance metrics is calculated and the comparison analysis for various parameters shows effective target trail provides better performance than existing system. For both existing and proposed method, the performance metrics is calculated and the comparison analysis are simulated using NS2 for various parameters, which shows target trail provides better performance than existing system.
