Abstract

Spherical tanks are widely used in process industries due to its high storage capacity. These tanks are non-linear due to its varying surface area with respect to its height and hence the level control of a spherical tank system is a challenging task. Different methods are available for level control and Proportional, Integral and Derivative (PID) controllers are one among the most used controllers.

In this paper, the level control in Tank 2 of a Two Tank Spherical Interacting System (TTSIS) is considered. Since the spherical tank system is non-linear, the controller design is done based on different regions. The mathematical models of different regions are determined and Second Order Plus Time Delay (SOPTD) models are obtained. The Performance indices of level control process in TTSIS is analysed with conventional PID controller, Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC), Fuzzy tuned PID controllers. The Performance indices are improved in Particle Swarm Optimised (PSO) PID controller compared to other selected methods.
