Carnatic Music Analysis based on Spectral Properties

Abstract

Ancient Indian civilization created distinct landmarks in the cultural expansion and artistic advancement bequeathing a glorious heritage to our country. Indian music forms an invaluable part of this ancient culture. In India, music is considered as divine and there are many instances of saints and seers in the history of Indian music who found God in music and music is often venerated as God. The Indian music reveals the existence of a magnificent system of music even during ancient period and has preserved continuity and growth throughout the cultural history of India. Hence, logical understanding and better appreciation of the values of Indian music is always considered important. The seventy two melakarta ragas of Carnatic music are arranged in two major subdivisions namely sudhamadhyama and pratimadhyama. Each of the subdivision has six chakras and each chakra contain six ragas. There is no scientific evidence in the literature for the reason behind the precise arrangement of chakras and ragas within chakra. In this paper, we put forward certain facts to justify this precise arrangement by analysing the spectral features of all the seventy two melakarta ragas.
