The Textile Industry occupies a unique role in the Indian Economy. At current prices the Indian textiles industry is US$ 52 billion, 64% of which services from domestic demand. The textiles industry accounts for 14% of industrial production and gives employment for 35 million people and accounts for nearly 12% share of the country's total exports basket. The industry which was growing 3 to 4% during the last six decades has now accelerated to an annual growth rate of 9 to 10%. The structure of powerloom sector in Tamil Nadu differs from that observed in other states like Maharashtra and Gujarat. It differs in respect of the production pattern, size of the unit, concentration of powerloom centres. At present, it is found that there are more than 5 lakhs looms in this sector.
