Deterioration of Human Values and Proclavity towards Materialistic World: Tagore's “Ramkanai's Folly”

The authors of this paper examine the concept of Indian traditional values and how the values are degrading in the modern materialistic world. The beginning of the twenty first century is an era in which the tendency towards ethics, morality and human nature has lost its roots and made the life a drudgery and meaningless in every aspect. The familial relationships and its values had existed in true sense in the yesteryears but the onset of materialistic culture has made these wonderful noble thoughts as things of glorious past. In this story, Ramkanai's Folly by Tagore, the relationship between his brother and other members of the family was at its best during the days when his brother was alive. Later Ramkanai was subjected to humility and took for a ride due to greediness of other family members to aggrandize the wealth and attachment of the property. In this short story, “Ramkanai„s Folly” it is clearly depicted through the powerful words of Tagore that people in the modern world are thinking of their materialistic benefits but they relegated to background thetrue relationships that bind every member of this family.
