Mechanical Characteristics and Structural Behaviour of Engineered Cementitious Composites using Polyvinyl Alcohol Fiber

Abstract

Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) is a type of high performance cementitious composites which it has good ductility and durability properties. This paper focuses on the experimental investigation on the mechanical characteristics and structural behaviour of ECC using Poly Vinyl Alcohol fiber (PVA). The addition of PVA is varied from 0% to 2% in the interval of 0.2% to the cement matrix. The mortar specimen was casted to evaluate the compressive, split tensile and flexural strength of ECC. The ECC layered beam was casted to examine the structural behaviour of composites. All the specimens were tested at the age of 28 days. By evaluating the experimental test results, it was observed that the ECC has better performance characteristics and structural behaviour compared to control specimen and also 1.2% addition of PVA fiber in ECC shows noticeable strength development compared to all other mixes and also ECC layered beam shown good ductility and energy absorption capacity compared to control beam specimen.
