Secret in Hafez's Poetry

One of the unique characteristics of ‘Sapient’ is to keep faithfulness in lovemaking scene, which means that an honest lover should conceal his love and adore from strangers and show his faith only to his beloved. In his poems, Hafez, actually builds such deep and meaningful concepts regarding ‘secret’ conveying this concept to the audience that one of the most beautiful manifestation of love and adore is, to keep the ‘secret’ of love. The political and cultural circumstances of Hafez era show that prejudice and superstitions as well as emphasizing too much on the external conduct of religion and also religious disputes and quarrels among different branches of Islam caused the well informed social classes to get somehow metaphorical usage of concepts and gradually became so far and inaccessible to ordinary people unfamiliar with such idioms, among them secret, confidant of mystery and etc. In this article searching through different meanings of secret in Hafez's poetry, we have tried to discuss “mystery” from Hafez's point of view. Hafez believes that one of the main attributes of a lover is secret keeping and this matter is not something to learn but rather is achieved through inner conception. No one is confident enough to share the novice's secrets. An intimate is one who is aware of the secret of love.
