Production of Orange Oil Methyl Ester and Experimental Investigation on Thermal Barrier Coated Diesel Engine

Abstract

Non- edible orange oil is selected and utilized as alternative fuel in diesel engine. The traditional method of transestrification is employed for preparation orange oil methyl ester from raw orange oil. The chemical properties of prepared orange oil methyl ester were determined using FTIR method and the presence of alkanes, alkenes and saturated and unsaturated aromatic esters were found. Further its fuel properties were found based on ASTM standards and compared with neat diesel fuel properties. To achieve low heat rejection from engine thermal barrier coating were applied in combustion chamber. Partially stabilized zirconia is selected as thermal barrier coating material due to its poor thermal conductivity and applied in the regions of piston, cylinder head and valves. An investigation has been made to compare the performance and emission characteristics of orange oil methyl ester with neat diesel in coated and uncoated engine condition. The BSFC is reduced in coated engine operation for both the fuels. BTE of prepared sample exhibits a higher efficiency in both operating condition. Moreover emission reductions were observed in both the coated and uncoated diesel engine.
