The Effect of Fly Ash and Bagasse Ash in the Properties of Light Weight Concrete

Abstract

The current study mainly focuses on identifying contemporary replacement for river sand in Light Weight Concrete (LWC). The researchers have shown keen interest in replacing river sand by abundantly available solid wastes such as fly ash and bagasse ash which are likely to support waste management and also provide possible alternative for the most exploited river sand. The experimental study was carried out with three different series of mortar cube with three identical specimens. In the mix ratio, water to solid ratio and foaming agent (aluminium powder) were kept as constants for all the series as 0.45 and 0.3% and cement to sand ratio varied from 1: 1 to 1: 3. The fly ash was replaced with 25% to 100% with the increment of 25% and the bagasse ash was replaced with 10% to 50% with an increment of 10% in the sand fractions. The observed results have shown greater compatibility of fly ash usage up to 25% and 30% of bagasse ash usage as sand replacer in LWC with enhanced strength characteristics.
