Elderly People in Bangladesh: A Review from the Census

Abstract

Population ageing is a natural biological phenomenon. Ageing of Population is an emerging issue nowadays in the developing countries including Bangladesh. Bangladesh is a success story in family planning to curb the fertility. Mortality has declined substantially as a result a demographic transition in the country has occurred. The present study provides a descriptive analysis of elderly people of Bangladesh based on the latest census conducted by BBS in 2011. A comparative study has also been done with the previous censuses. Elderly women are clearly disadvantaged in terms of educational attainment and literacy rate. Women are widowed in much higher number than the men in this age range. Women are active in household work and as usual they are not considered to be economically active.
