Process of Urbanization and Population Dynamics in Dakshin Dinajpur District, West Bengal – A Geographical Analysis

Abstract

Rapid urbanization over the world implies not only multiplying the number of cities or towns, at the same time, it indicates urban population at increasing levels. Urbanization brings the radical changes, affects socio-economic, political, cultural facets of the human society. It is evident, that the trend and the growth of urban development have put enormous pressure on the existing land use An increase of population and shifting of agricultural activities into non-agriculture activities has brought revolutionary changes in thepatternof societal life and demographic structure in everywhere of earth's surface. Like other countries in India, the rapid rate of urbanization and growing growth of small towns with their continuous contribution in nation's G.D.P is very much significant at present. Dakshin Dinajpur one of themarginal districts in the state West Bengal, in India has experienced with very recent phases of urbanization process. A key concern of this present research work is to seek some insights into recent changes in demographic structure and economic changes through the urbanization processes that occur in thestudy region.
