The Theme of “Assimilation” in V.S.Naipaul's The Mimic Men: A Socio-Cultural perspective

The proposed research paper is a grave attempt to critically analyze V.S. Naipaul's concern for the dislocated position of migrants in diverse cultures through his novel The Mimic Men. Naipaul, being a diasporic writer have experienced and seen consequences of diaspora, is a displaced writer due to transcending boundaries and its outcomes are much discussed and written in the present day literature. The present paper delves into the cultural issues arise due to lack of assimilation and Naipaul have a number of novels in his credit which brings forth the dislocated position of migrants and manifestation of his struggle with different culture and his almost all novels highlight the conditions of migrants that how immigrants in order to survive in the new land, try to assimilate in the native culture. Several others build entirely new identity by integrating and assimilating into new society. Some others who cannot assimilate and face identity problem and disappear from the host land or they live continually as outsiders. While the second and third generation immigrants go through the process of assimilation. Due to non-acceptance, and lack of assimilation immigrants bear depression and maladjustments in the society. Gradually their condition turns into more worse when their actual experience becomes more and more contradictory with their expectations. Such intense depressed jouney full of anxities, physical and psychological agony and crisis due to incomplete identity lead migrants to nothingness and they become others in the adopted lands.
