Social Organization of the Rabha Community in the Light of Tradition and Modernity, West Bengal: A Case Study

Abstract

The word organization has derived from the Greek word ‘organization’ refers to an entity comprising multiple people such as an institution or association that has collective goal and is linked to external environment. All organizations have a management structure that determines relationships between the different activities and the members and sub-divided and assigns roles, responsibilities and authority to carry out different tasks. The Rabha is a tribal community of the greater Mongoloid ethnic group of North East India. The Rabha organization has a sustained historical base and peculiarity. The Rabhas mostly occupied in Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura. A section of the Rabhas is concentrated in Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts in West Bengal. This paper highlights the traditional and transitional social organization of the Rabha community in particular. It is important to study the social organizations of the Rabha community to understand their flexibility, capacity to change and many other factors instigating it. Therefore, the organization system is an important issue for management of society. But it is a matter to consider that the inherent traditional cultures of the Rabha community, is in the way of decline day by day with influence of Rajbansis and other Bengalis. The impact of it has also tried to understand for future prognosis of any change in the social organizational level of this community.
