Abstract

The anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions contribute to a larger extent on global climate change. There is a need for new technologies to mitigate this problem. Among the various CO2 capture technologies, the most suitable ones for post-combustion power plants is found to be adsorption and chemical absorption. This paper explores the possibilities of CO2 capture in Diesel Engines by using Activated Carbon as an adsorbent material. It is significant to analyze the potential advantages of solid adsorbents for post-combustion CO2 capture. This paper aims to control the CO2 emissions by implementing CO2 capture for internal combustion engines. Solid adsorbent materials are used to adsorb the CO2 molecules from the exhaust. In this work, the CO2 emission is reduced by incorporating after treatment device. The CO2 trapping device is developed and packed with the Activated Carbon as adsorbent material. The adsorption rate is measured at variable load conditions. The exhaust temperature is measured using thermocouples. In this method, the exhaust gas is exposed over the adsorbent material and the emission analysis has been performed. The major criteria for selection of adsorbent, CO2 adsorption capacity, adsorption rate and thermal stability are compared and discussed. The less energy consuming regeneration techniques for CO2 loaded adsorbents are proposed and also more effective. Future works for both absorption and adsorption are suggested.
