The growing natural concerns, exhaustion of fossil fuels and the accumulating fuel prices, has an inclination given to inquiry of alternative fuels in the diesel engines. The biodiesel has turned into a more alluring than other optional fuels in the compression ignition engines because of generation from the renewable sources and ecological advantages. The direct usage of biodiesel into a diesel engine can bring about many problems because of its lower calorific value and higher viscosity; hence the biodiesel is blended with diesel in various proportions and can be used in diesel engines. But there is a lot of scope for further improvement in the engine performance, combustion characteristics and minimization in the engine exhaust emissions with the use of biodiesel as the fuel for C.I engines. There are different techniques available to enhance engine performance and reduce exhaust emissions, such as the engine modification, formulating new fuels, and the exhaust gas after treatment. In recent years among all the methods, the formulating new fuels method with nanoparticle was commonly employed in diesel engines to improve thermo-physical properties, combustion parameters and shorten the emissions. In this article a brief review is given about the several works carried out by the researchers on nanoparticles mixed with diesel, biodiesel and its blends in the diesel engine to assess the performance, combustion and reduce the engine emissions.
