The political history of northeast India in the post-independence phasehas been full of troubles and conflicts between the anti-national forces and the bloody clashes caused by the constant war between Indian security forces and the underground forces of northeast who were actively fighting for independence or liberation of their lands from Indian occupation. The tribal movements, which have taken the shape of insurgency and factional fighting in the northeastern part of the country are the reflection of regional identities, demand of cessation, separation, autonomy and statehood based on ethnic considerations. This paper examines the complex interplay of ethnicity, ideology and religious identity in shaping the insurgent movements in northeast Indiaand also explores the degree to which these factors promoted the separatist movements and impacted the national integration.
