Attitude towards Social Networking Site in relation to Internet Addiction among College Students in Cuddalore District

Abstract

Web social networks are a new generation of web facilities that are in the center of Internet users’ attention today. These kinds of sites work on the basis of the formation of online communities, and each one bring together the groups of Internet users with common interests or characteristics.

Internet addiction is described as an impulse control disorder, which does not involve use of an intoxicating drug and is very similar to pathological gambling.

The present study explores the relationship between the attitude towards social networking and internet addiction. 320 arts and science college students from Cuddalore district formed the sample of the study.

Random sampling procedure was adopted. Scale of attitude towards Social networking site by Satish Surwanshi and Amit Deolia. Internet addiction test by Dr. Kimberly Young was used as data gathering devices to assess the scale of attitude towards social networking site and internet addiction.

Results revealed that attitude towards Social networking site and Internet addiction were negatively correlated. The influence of background variables namely gender, age, college type and residence over attitude towards Social networking site and Internet addiction was studied.
