The Game is On (Again)!: Analysis of BBC's ‘Sherlock’ as Reincarnation of Detective-Fiction Genre

Detective fiction genre is one of the most celebrated genres both in literary and visual media texts. With technological advancement of tools in moving image products this genre started disassociating from its conventional paradigms of narrative as well as visual storytelling. The disassociation is taking place on two structural level of moving image detective-fiction genre i.e. technical and symbolic. The cardinal purpose of this qualitative genre study is to identify those technical and symbolic genre elements causing reincarnation of conventional genre into contemporary visual stylistics of Television settings with analysis of BBC's detective fiction TV series ‘Sherlock’. The study investigates total 10 episodes each of 90 minutes aired during years 2010–2016 to reach on firm qualitative ground to analyse and comment on the genre development in detective-fiction with reference to film genre theory. With invisible transactional Cut's and floating text technique in interaction display, BBC's ‘Sherlock’ sets a path-breaking example of genre development catalyst in global Television.
