Quantification of Qualitative Data: A Case of Application of Remote Sensing and GIS in Water Resource Management

Abstract

Problem solving role of disciplines demands a focus on Natural Resource management, which in itself is amultidisciplinary effort. Remote Sensing and GIS technologies provide immense potential in natural resource management. But Natural Resource Management within the ambit of Geography is not only concerned with “where” but also with “why”. This why poses difficulty in quantification because “why” is inherent qualitative. This study comes out with the review of studies which tried to quantify the qualitative data in the area of natural resource management. With a focus on water resource management this study gives an insight into the potentials and problems of integration of social aspect with the spatial aspect.
