Relationship between the Infrastructural and Agricultural Development in the Purba Bardhaman District, West Bengal-A Comparative Analysis

As India possesses a vast tracts of arable lands, agriculture occupies a very prestigious position in India's economy, contributing one-third national income of Gross Domestic Production (GDP) and average 58% of population has been engaged in agriculture and allied activities. So, agriculture is a backbone of Indian economy. After Independence, with the help of technological breakthrough, three-fold increase in production has been achieved by commodity-oriented programs implementation. These infrastructural have massively increased farm output and dramatically changed the way people are employed and produce world-wide. Otherwise, this capital intensiv e-technology, pesticides and chemical fertilizer has negative impact on linear flow of natural resources (degradation) and rural society. Though agricultural development is uneven all over the country due to it is highly vulnerable to the uncertainties of agro-ecological factors and variation of infrastructural development. So is the fact of Purba Bardhaman district. But in spite of its all limitations it is one of the leading rice producing districts of West Bengal. This paper investigates the relationship between the role of infrastructural development in agricultural sector and agricultural production with its spatial variation in Purba Bardhaman district. It is observed that socio-economic development is not always related with the agricultural development rather than pedo-hydro-climatic factors. The study also suggested and recommended that how agro-infrastructure can suitably be developed for the agricultural development in the Purba Bardhaman district of West Bengal.
