Status of Education and Causes of Illiteracy among Labour Market Workers: A Study of Aligarh City, Uttar Pradesh, India

Education attainment and literacy rate are the significant variable in terms of socio-economic development of the society. The present work attempts to examine the level of education, status of literacy and causes of illiteracy of daily labour market workers in Aligarh city. The research work is based on primary source of data through the direct questionnaire to the respondents in the city carried out during 2015. The study reveals that majority of daily labour market workers were considered as illiterate in Aligarh city. Among literate workers, more than forty six percent daily labour market workers have primary level of education. Similarly, among total labour market worker households, about two-third proportion of the total population is witnessed as illiterate, and in workers family members (both in males and females), more than half of the population are observed as illiterate. In addition to this, more than one-third of total labour market worker households have only primary education. More than thirty percent of the males and two-fifth proportion of females of the household of labour market workers are only educated up to primary level. Moreover, the economic causes have predominance in terms of increasing illiteracy in the city.
