The Sivasagar district of Assam is well known as the land of colourful tribes and castes. The population is comprised with Ahoms, Brahmins, Kumars, Chutias, Nagas, Deories, Garos, Kaibartas, Kalitas, Kacharis, Mishings, Shyams, Sonomals, Bodos, Naths, Oriyas, etc. There are about five major castes with colourful culture, customs and tradition in the district. Among these, the Kaibarta is the largest castes in the Sivasagar district of Assam. There are about thirty villages of Kaibartas in the district. The villages are surrounded by different segments of the Assamese society. It is observed that the Kaibarta community as a whole is under the process of rapid change. The Kaibartas are basically truthful and peace loving people. They are more interested to maintain social peace and harmony. In this background, in this work an attempt has been made to discuss about the social, cultural and educational aspects of Kaibartas in the Sivasagar district of Assam.
