Abstract

I use data on time spent watching religious TV channels to test three propositions regarding the religious engagement of Indians:

Younger people have lower religious engagement than older people.

People living in urban centres have lower religious engagement than those in rural areas.

Women have greater religious engagement than men.

I find evidence for the first proposition, with the average time spent by people above the age of 50 years being 189.908 seconds (per month) more than the average time spent on religious TV channels by people below the age of 50 years controlling for gender, region and urban or rural.

I find no evidence for the second proposition as the difference in average time spent on religious TV channels in urban vsruralareas controlling for age, region and gender is not statisticallysignificant.

I find evidence for the third proposition with the average time spent by men on religious TV channels being 98.443 seconds less than women controlling for age, region and urban or rural.
