The paper begins by exploring the significance of IP for the knowledge driven economy due to which specific IP policy governing the entire process from creation to commercialization has become almost indispensable for academia. Many academic institutes in India have taken concrete steps in the direction of framing IP policy which is discussed in the second part of this paper. As the fruits of IP are being enjoyed globally, developed and developing countries in USA, UK and Asia are having successful models of following specific and detailed IP policy in Academic Institutes. Comparative aspects on the same are considered in the third part. An attempt is made to discuss the Model IP Policy for Indian academia in the fourth part by considering the opportunities and challenging in framing such policy. Finally, the paper concludes with an observation that one size fits all approach will not work in case of IP Policy for the academia. One has to develop IP strategies locally to get optimum benefits globally.
