The morphometric analysis of the drainage basin and channel network play an important role in understanding the geo-hydrological features of drainage basin and expresses the prevailing climate, geology, geomorphology, structural antecedents of the catchment. Morphometric analysis of a drainage basin expresses fully the state of dynamic balance that has been attained due to dealings between matter and energy. It finds out geomorphologic and structural control of flow and runoff and is helpful in predicting floods, their extent and intensity.
The present study has been conducted to morphometric analysis of the Cauvery basin of Kodagu district. The Cauvery River is one of the important river of south Karnataka and originate at Talakaveri in Bramhagiri hills of Kodagu district. Its upper course almost is in Kodagu district and Morphometric analysis of this river has linear and areal analysis. Linear morphometry comprises stream order, stream length, mean stream length, stream length ratio, bifurcation ratio and mean bifurcation ratio. Areal morphometry analysis includes drainage density (D), stream frequency (Fs), texture ratio (T), elongation ratio (Re), circularity ratio (Re), form factor ratio (Rf), and compactness constant(Cc).
