Efficient callus formation from cultured seeds of four rice genotypes namely, Pankaj, Rajendra Bhagwati, Rajshree and RAU-Aer03 was studied. MS medium supplemented with 2, 4-D (2.0 mg/l) and variable concentrations of Kinetin (0.5 mg/l and 1.0 mg/l) was used. MS medium with 2, 4-D (2.0 mg/l) showed the best callusing response followed by the same medium supplemented with Kinetin (0.5 mg/l and 1.0 mg/l) respectively. The addition of kinetin in the callusing medium reduced the callus formation with its increasing concentration. An efficient callus formation protocol was established.
