Abstract

DNA based markers have emerged as a robust genomic tool for the estimation of genetic diversity and cultivar identification. We are reporting genetic diversity among 18 pearl millet cultivars. In the present study SSR markers were used to estimate genetic variability of pearl millet genotypes. The 18 pearl millet genotypes differentiate in to three major clusters. 14.45% polymorphism was observed using SSR markers however, all polymorphic primer showed PIC value ranging from 0.12 to 0.74, with average PIC value 0.35. It indicate average genetic diversity across 18 genotypes of pearl millet. Results clearly illustrated the need of acquisition of variability at genetic level by artificial methods for various pearl millet breeding programme. Molecular markers allow breeders to dissect complex traits without having to measure the phenotype, thus reducing the need for extensive field-testing over time and space.
