Abstract

Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction, as a relatively new separation technique, can be used as a very efficient process in the production of essential oils and oleoresins from many of plant materials. The Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SCFE) is gaining increasing interest in last decades because of its suitability for extraction and purification of compounds having low volatility or which are susceptible to thermal degradation. This review provides an updated overview on the application Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) has emerged as a highly promising environmental friendly technology for selectively recovering thermally labile bioactive ingredients from natural sources. The nutraceutical produced by SFE using carbon dioxide (CO2) at nearambient temperatures are preferred by consumers due to their superior quality and higher bioactivity without the problems of residual solvent and microbial contamination.
