Heterosis and Combining Ability for Yield and Yield Component Characters in Mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek]

Abstract

Forty five cross combinations were developed by 10 x 10 half diallel analysis during summer 2014 and evaluated 45 F1’s and 10 parents during kharif 2014–15. Sixteen crosses out of 45 crosses manifested significant positive heterobeltiosis for grain yield per plant. The range of heterobeltiosis for grain yield was wide (−-38.83 to 58.87%). The hybrid GM-3 X ML-1451 expressed the highest heterobeltiosis (58.87%). General combining ability and specific combining ability variances were highly significant for all the characters. This indicated that both additive and non-additive gene effects involved in the inheritance of the characters under study. An overall consideration of gca effects indicated that the parents GM4, Pusa-0672 and ML-1451 appeared to be good general combiners for grain yield per plant. For grain yield per plant, the crosses GM-4 X DGG-1, GM-3 X ML-1451 and ML-1451 X TM-96-2 recorded the highest sca effects.
