Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2012 and 2013 at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Mohanpur, Nadia, West Bengal to find out the suitable variety among different promising entries of forage oat and effect of different nitrogen levels on forage yield, quality and economics. Twelve different entries (JO-0397, JO-03-99, SKO-170, SKO-188, OS-377, UPO-10-1, JHO-10-2, JHO-10-1, UPO-10-2, JHO-99-2, OS-6 and Kent) and three nitrogen levels (40, 80 and 120 kg ha−1) were tested under the study. The new entry ‘JHO-10-2’ and the nitrogen level 120 kg ha−1 were showed the superiority over others during both of the years of study. Increasing levels of nitrogen progressively enhanced plant height (cm), plant population m−2 and all the yield attributes and even the B: C ratio up to 120 kg N ha−1. Varieties and nitrogen levels interacted significantly and the highest fodder yield (290.89 q ha−1) and economics were recorded with ‘JHO-10-2’ at 120 kg N ha−1and was found suitable and economical to the farmer.
