Morphological Characterization of Stable CMS, Maintainer and Restorer Lines in Pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.]

Abstract

The investigation on morphological characterization was carried out for 21 traits of 12 genotypes consisting cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS), maintainer and restorer lines. The results revealed that out of 12 genotypes used only one restorer line WRP-1 showed the presence of Anthocyanin colour on hypocotyls helps to maintain purity and identity of genotype. The all 12 genotypes were showed large differences with respect to morphological traits, such asdays to 50% flowering and days to maturity delayed in all 3 male sterile lines of ICPA-2043, ICPA-2078 and GT-288A by 2.67 ± 1.34, 2.00 ± 1.34 and 1.00 ±1.34 and by 2.33 ± 1.65, 1.33 ± 1.65 and 4.67 ± 1.65, differences were also recorded in plant height 100 seed weight. However, the traits such as number of seeds per pod (0.07) pod size (0.09 cm) and 100 seed weight (0.15 gm) exhibited very negligible differences. Especially the qualitative traits like, red flower color and pod color as green with purple streaks are found in TS-3R and BRG-3 restorers. The overall objective of this study was to identify pigeonpea genotypes for distinguishable morphological traits and can be used as identification and varietal purification marks during the course of seed production programme.
