Surgical Retrieval Of Baby Feeding Tube In An African Grey Parrot (Psittacus Erithacus, Linnaeus, 1758)

Abstract

An African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus, Linnaeus, 1758) was presented to the Department of Veterinary Surgery & Radiology, College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, Anand with a history of accidental ingestion of baby feeding tube. Radiographic examination revealed presence of radiolucent tubular foreign body in crop area. It was decided to perform emergency ingluviotomy under inhalant anaesthesia using chamber induction with isoflurane. Preparation of the site was carried out by plucking surrounding feathers and surgical scrubbing. One stab incision was made on palpated end in crop. Feeding tube of approximately 9 cm length was retrieved from the crop. Suturing of crop was done by 3–0 Polyglactin 910 absorbable surgical suture in two-layers suturing technique. Cephalexin powder was given orally for 5 post-operative days. Bird recovered uneventfully in 10 days.
