This paper focusses on biodegradable coatings and films applied to fresh produce like mushrooms and their effect on product quality. Increased consumer demand for higher quality food in combination with the environmental need to reduce disposable packaging waste has led to more interest in research of biodegradable coatings/films. The use of biodegradable coatings/films stands out among other techniques in the struggle of maintaining the freshness of mushrooms. Types of biodegradable coatings/films is discussed in detail along with its effect on physico-chemical, microbiological and sensory attributes of packed mushrooms.
