Heterosis Studies for Yield and Yield Attributing Traits in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

Abstract

Magnitude of heterosis were estimated by Line x Tester analysis including 21 F1 cross combinations using ten parents (Seven lines and three testers) at Regional Horticultural Research Station, NAU, Navsari (Gujarat). These 31 genotypes (Seven lines and three testers and 21 resultant F1 hybrids) were evaluated for growth, yield and quality contributing traits. The most promising crosses showing significantly standard heterosis for maximum yield were AVTO-9 x GT-2, AVTO-1 x JT-3, AVTO-6 x AT-3, AVTO-9 x AT-3 and AVTO-9 x JT-3. These elite hybrids may be tested for yield and other quality traits under different agro-climatic conditions for commercial exploitation of hybrid vigour. The results suggest a high degree of variability and heterosis in positive direction among the crosses. Hence, these crosses exhibited commercial potential to replace the check after further testing.
