Studies on Growth and Development of Immature Fruits (Nungu) in Palmyrah (Borassus flabellifer L.)

An experimental trial was carried outat Agricultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Killikulam to study the growth pattern of immature fruits (nungu) in palmyrah (Borassus flabellifer L). Growth and development of immature fruits were recorded at weekly intervals right from fruit initiation. The result of the study implies that the mean length and girth of immature fruits was found to be 23 and 27 cm and the mean rate of growth was observed as 0.60 cm/day during the entire developmental stages of the fruit. The number of days taken from flower opening (anthesis) to fruit set (12), the number of days taken from fruit set to maturity as nungu (50) and number of fruits per inflorescence (15).
