Genetic variability, genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation, heritability and genetic advance for eleven characters in Forty nine (49) rice germplasmincluding four check varieties of rice were studied. The analysis of variance revealed that there were highly significant differences for all the characters Leaf Length, Panicle Length, 1000-seed Wt, Germination % and Coleoptiles Length. The estimates of genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation (GCV and PCV) were high for all the characters except days to 50% flowering panicle length, panicle initiation and panicle exertion. Heritability and genetic advance were high for all the traits except panicle exsertion. This indicates that this character is highly influenced by environmental effect and selection would be ineffective. Moderate heritability with high genetic advance as percentage of mean was observed for grain yield plant-1, total number of tillers plant-1, plant height, flag leaf length and panicle length. This also indicates that these characters are governed by additive gene effects.
