Three Lines and six testers were crossed in a line x tester fashion to work out combining ability and gene action. The analysis of variance for combining ability of all the traits showed that variances due to treatments, parents, hybrids were highly significant. The analysis further revealed highly significant differences for all the characters among the lines, testers and line x tester and parents’ vs hybrids. Among the lines IR79156A was found to be the good general combiner and among testers R1060-1674-1-1, JHITPITI and P-1460 were found to be good general combiners for grain yield per plant, pollen fertility and filled spikelets per panicle. Out of eighteen hybrids positive significant SCA effect for grain yield per plant were exhibited by nine hybrids. IR58025A/PR-111 (9.63) showed highly significant positive SCA effects followed by IR79156A/R1060-1674-1-1(5.83), IR79156A/JHITPITI (5.72), IR58025A/P-1460(4.39) and IR58025A/R-1213-3 (1.28) for grain yield per plant. Out of 9 hybrids, IR58025A/PR-111, IR79156A/R1060-1674-1-1 and IR79156A/JHITPITI were the top three hybrids recorded high per se performance and significant positive SCA effects for grain yield.
