Therapeutic Management of Snakebite Induced Haemolytic-Uremic Syndrome in a Doberman Pinscher

Abstract

A one and half year-old female Doberman Pinscher was brought to Department of Veterinary Surgery & Radiology, College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, Anand Agricultural University, Anand with a history of snakebite, anuria and eventual recumbency. Haematoma formation at the site of blood collection despite application of a haemostat and uncoltrolled bleeding at site of snakebite indicated haemolytic crisis. Haematobiochemistry revealed anaemia, thrombocytopenia, leucocytosis as well as increased blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels based on which, the condition was confirmed as snakebite induced haemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS). Therapeutic management consisted use of specific antivenin and other drugs for management of uremic crisis as per guidelines of International Renal Interest Society (IRIS)-2013. The dog showed gradual improvement in clinical health status and complete recovery on 12th day post-treatment The details of the case is discussed.
