Abstract

Transgenics are an auspicious tool to addendum conventional pest resistance programme. There is a need to conjoin transgenic technology into the on-going insect pest management programmes. Transgenic plants expressing plant insecticidal proteins such as protease inhibitors, alpha-amylase inhibitors and lectins has been demonstrated resistance to different phytophagous insects. These proteins are effective against the growth and development of insects and act on their digestive system. This review describes the main classes of plant insecticidal proteins, their types, their action mechanism and their role in control of different phytophagous insects.
