Abstract

Basic physical and engineering properties of the seed are to be determined for development of mechanical sowing equipment. The physical properties of bare and pelleted carrot seeds were studied to determine their suitability for mechanical metering. The physical properties namely size, shape, sphericity, thousand seed weight, angle of repose, true density, porosity, bulk density and coefficient of static friction were measured and pelletization effieciency, dissolution time and fragmentation tests were measured for bare and pelleted carrot seeds i.e Nantes (TE) and New Kuroda (NK). The geometric mean diameter was 1.08, 1.11 and 1.81 mm for TE, NK varieties and for the pelleted carrot seeds respectively. The average values of angle of repose of carrot seeds were 34.5, 32.3 and 29.4 for TE, NK varieties and for the pelleted carrot seeds respectively.
