Influenced by Seed Treatments, Containers and their Interactions on Storability of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Seeds

Abstract

The freshly harvested seeds of wheat (cv. PBW 343) were prepared after careful cleaning, grading and well drying (11%) prior to storage. polymer use blue bearlescentfinsh seed coating polymer (cistronicstechnovation.pvt.ltd). The seeds were treated with various treatments like synthetic polymer (@ 5ml, 7ml and 10 ml per kg of seed symbolized as T2, T3, T4 respectively), fungicide (Thiram @ 2g per kg of seed symbolized as T8) and their combinations treatment (@ polymer 5 ml + thiram 2g, polymer 7 ml + thiram 2g and polymer 10 ml + thiram 2g per kg of seed symbolized as T5, T6, T7 respectively) withcontrol (symbolizedas T1). After application of synthetic polymer, the poly-coated seeds were being shade dried and a number of seeds were further treated with fungicide (thiram) at recommended dose. These seeds were stored in normal cotton bag (C2) and plastic box (C1) under ambient condition in the post graduate laboratory of Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, SHIATS, Allahabad, (U.P.). The condition of deterioration or storability was measured under these storing diverse treatments through evaluation of seedling characters in different duration of seed storing viz. 2, 4 and 6 months. Observation was recorded the interaction effects due to different treatment combination and containers were significant. The seed quality parameters were higher with T7C1 and lower with T1C1 throughout storage period in most of the cases. At the end month of storage, the value was slightly declining due to deterioration of seed though the effect of treatments showed same trend. Significantly higher germination was recorded in C2 (cotton bag), which was 88.88% compare to C1 (plastic box) which was 87.88%. Significantly higher value of shoot length, root length, total seedling length and vigour index were recorded with the seeds stored in plastic box (C1) in compare to cottonbag (C2) at the end month of storage. Fresh weight and dry weight were same in both containers i.e., C1 and C2 (0.67 g and 0. 15 g respectively). Interaction effects due to different treatment combination and containers were significant. The seed quality parameters were higher with T7C1 and lower with T1C1 throughout storage period in most of the cases.
