Chromium Accumulation in Tomato and Green Gram Raised in A Lateritic Hill Soil

Abstract

Pot culture experiment were carried out to examine the chromium (Cr) accumulation levels in tomatoand green gram plants grown in Cr spiked lateritic soil. The initial physico-chemical properties of the soil showed a neutral pH (6.50); organic carbon content 4.4 g kg−1; cation exchange capacity 3.6 cmol (p+) kg1 of soil. The initial estimated total Cr content in the soil was 39.6 mg kg−1 after spiking, which could be considered as moderate contamination in lateritic hill soil. Seedlings were harvested at 30 days after sowing, dried and analysed for Cr content. Plant uptake and accumulation levels of Cr were generally higher in tomato crop than in green gram crop. The results indicated that the magnitude of metal uptake by tomato and green gram was high enough to be suitable for removing substantial Cr from soilscontaminated with Cr. The tomato crop showed higher Cr accumulation capability than green gram crop.
