Genetic Variability, Heritability and Genetic Advance in Inter-Specific Hybrids of Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum × Gossypium barbadense) Over Environments

Abstract

The present study was conducted over three environments viz., Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) Lam Farm, Agricultural Research Station (ARS) Jangamaheswarapuram and Agricultural College Farm, Bapatla during kharif, 2014–15. The analysis of variance revealed that significant variation was present among the genotypes for all the traits studied. Wide variability was observed for number of monopodia plant−1, number of bolls plant1, seed cotton yield plant−1 and lint yield plant−1 which indicates their amenability towards directional selection. The traits viz., plant height, number of sympodia plant−1, boll weight and micronaire value recorded moderate variability. High heritability coupled with highgeneticadvance as per centof mean was observed in case of micronaire value, seed cotton yield plant−1 and lint yield plant−1 which suggests the role of additive gene action in the inheritance of these traits and directional selection could be profitably exploited.
