Effect of Polygonaceous Plants on Oviposition Preference of Galerucella placida Baly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

Abstract

Investigation on “Oviposition preference of Galerucella placida on different polygonaceous plant” was carried out in the laboratory of the Department of Entomology, College of Agriculture, Central Agricultural University, Imphal during 20142015. Study on oviposition preference of G. placida on ten polygonaceous plants showed that the polygonaceous plants, viz., Polygonum lapathifolium (Linn.) var. lanatum (Roxb.) Stew. and Polygonum chinense (Linn.) var. ovalifolia Hara. were not preferred for oviposition by the insect. Based on the ovipositional preference of G. placida, it was maximum on Polygonum. minus Huds. (2.40 egg mass/female) and (68.60 eggs/female) for a period of one week in choice test when main host Polygonum. hydropiper (Linn.) Spach. was excluded and it was minimum on Polygonum. perfoliatum Linn. (0.40 egg mass/female) and (9.60 eggs/female). However, in choice test when main host was included it was maximum on P. hydropiper (Linn.) Spach. (1.60 egg mass/female) and (46.00 eggs/female). It was minimum on P.perfoliatum Linn. (0.20 egg mass/female) and (8.00 eggs/female). Similarly, in no-choice test it was maximum on P. hydropiper (Linn.) Spach. (6.80 egg mass/female) and (199.80 eggs/female) and it was minimum on P. perfoliatum Linn. (1.40 egg mass/female) and (41.20 eggs/female).
